Why a Himalayan Salt Lamp you might ask… ? In this blog post we will discuss the benefits of having a Himalayan Salt lamp in your home or office space as well as the care instructions if you have already purchased one from us 😊

Himalayan Salt lamp, a beautiful lamp that not only gives a soft warm ambience to your room but also has a multitude of health benefits for you and your family.

           Himalayan Salt Lamp

The Himalayan lamp comes from the Himalayan Mountains and is made from pure salt crystals.  The warm pinkish orange glow comes from trace minerals like zinc, magnesium and potassium that are found naturally in the Himalayan salt crystals.  That’s why so many people use Himalayan salt in their daily diets as well - to get the benefits of these trace minerals, just don’t go licking your lamp!

Now you know why the Himalayan lamp gives off the colour it does, let’s look at the light and colour therapy benefit it has for us. The soft orange hues are often used to soothe and calm the mood and increase focus.  There is a lot of research showing how different light effects the body in different ways and the blue light that we are exposed to from our computer, TV screen and cell phones can have a negative effects on us from disrupting sleeping patterns to eye strain, especially after dark, were we tend to spend the most time looking at these screens.  Himalayan Salt lamps are a non-blue light source to use and as a sleep-friendly night light that won’t affect your sleep patterns.

Another great benefit of having the Himalayan Salt lamp in your home is how it’s going to improve the environment you live in, let’s get down to the science of it all.

Salt is naturally hygroscopic, which means it attracts water molecules to itself. Salt lamps attract water molecules in the air. Since water in the air can also hold allergens, pollutants and even bacteria, these substances get attracted to the lamp too. The heated salt lamp dries out the water vapor, leaving the particles attached to the salt. For this reason, we recommend wiping down the salt lamp with a dry cloth a few times a week to clean it in high humidity climates.

Your Himalayan salt lamp helps in the creation of negative ions.  At any given time, there are both positive and negative ions in the air.

“ An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom a net positive or negative electrical charge”

Positively charged ions are also known as cations, while negatively charged ions are anions. The positive or negative charge makes ions able to move and bond easily.  So, how do we relate to this in real life…  back to our blue screens, these are one of the things that tend to create an excess of positive ions in our environment  -  on the other hand negative ions occur more often in nature and are created by lightning storms, ocean waves, sunlight and waterfalls.  Think about how great you feel after having spent some time in nature.

Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, “They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.”

The longer you leave your Himalayan Salt lamp on in your home the more you will be generating negative ions, also a tip regarding the roughness of your lamp, the rougher the surface, the better.  The surface area of a salt lamp determines its hygroscopic potential. Rougher lamps have a higher surface area than smooth and polished lamps and are more effective at improving air quality.

We hope you enjoy your beautiful and eco-friendly light source, here are some suggestions on where to place your lamp

Allergy Sufferers – A salt lamp in the bedroom will help improve air quality and reduce airborne bacteria and irritants that can trigger Asthma and allergies.                                                                                                                                      Child’s Bedroom – a perfect night light that will help them sleep and make them feel safe and sound.

Cleaning your Himalaya Salt Lamp                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Use a feather duster or dry cloth to remove dust. Occasionally, use a lightly dampened cloth to clean.  In especially humid areas, a light film of water may build up on the outside of the lamp; simply turn the light on for a while and the heat will dry it well. Keep the light on as long as possible. NB Never wash or immerse your lamp in water, if your lamp gets wet, switch off, unplug and then wipe your lamp with a dry cloth.   If you plan on having your lamp switched off for an extended period, unplug the power cord, separate the cord from your salt lamp, and wrap the salt lamp in a plastic bag to keep it air tight, this will prevent the lamp from pooling water.
